Walk along the beach; rent horses go for a horse ride; Take your fishing gear or your surfboard, walk over the dune and there you are. You can stretch out by the pool or relax your body in the hot tub. Sit by the fire, watch a movie, play pool, ride one of the many bikes, shoot hoops its all up to you.

Beaches

There are many beaches to choose from on Hatteras Island each with its own unique character.

As You Like It Provides direct access to the “South facing” Frisco Beach which is one of the finest beaches on the island for many reasons: it is a wide, flat, sandy beach that provides a great place for the family to go relax and enjoy their Outer Banks vacation. Depending on the time of day, the tide, the wind, and the season The Frisco Beach also can provide excellent surf fishing and some of the best waves for surfing on the east coast of the mainland.

But beyond your home base, The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is known for its many different beaches and some of these may warrant a visit given the weather, the wind, and the time of year. You can find a beach where you will see no one; you can find a beach with mountains of shells; you can find a beach at the end of an island in the middle of the ocean and watch the sunrise or the sunset. It is all here; it is all part of a Hatteras Island vacation.

It is important to recognize that Hatteras Island is shaped like a boomerang; there are beaches that run from North to South (They face East) and there are beaches that run East to West (They face South / South west). Want the wind at your back? Want bigger surf? Want to find fish in cooler water? By traveling a short distance you can find a beach to suit your needs.

It is also helpful to recognize that The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is prolific in its milepost markers and that there are two different systems. (Somewhat confusing) The little green markers on the side of the road indicate how far you are from the bridge that brings you from the mainland.

On the other hand all National Park Service (NPS) markers and signs are measured from Coquina Beach which is a beach north just as you enter the National Seashore – No the numbers are not the same and that is the confusing part.

The reason that this is important is because ALL beaches, ramps for 4-wheel drive access, and all NPS facilities like parking areas, bathrooms, and "Haul over spots" are spoken of in terms of mile markers. The Frisco Beach 4 wheel drive access point is mile post 49  - (called: Ramp 49). The north end of Avon, a spot great for big red drum fishing, is simply called  "Ramp 34." A great Trout hole just below 38; the end of the island after ramp 55. OK enough of this, back to beaches –

In our neighborhood you may wish to explore other beaches either by 4 wheel drive or by parking and walking over.  – here is a useful RAMP map:

Driving on the Beach – Do you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle? Right now guests are allowed to drive out onto the beach (specific locations are excluded) and if you have the right vehicle, the right equipment, and some guts the best beaches are a drive.

The Point (Ramps 44 and 45) is something to behold and is revered by fishermen. The closest beach access ramp to As You Like It is Ramp 49. Is accessed by taking the turn to go to the Billy Mitchell Airport at the Frisco Post Office. Just before you go into the airport itself take the left and follow to the ramp itself. Also with a four wheel drive vehicle go to the end of the Island down down past Hatteras Village. Go past the Ferry dock and then onto the snad for about 10 minutes. Ramp 57 is another very special place.

Off Road driving Pointers

If you are going to drive on the beach here are a few helpful hints:

  1. Drop the air pressure in your tires to ½ of your normal tire pressure. (we use 18psi)
  2. Avoid soft sand and deep water
  3. A shovel, a piece of 2x12, and a tow rope are good things to bring along just in case
  4. Keep the changing tide in mind
  5. Please do not drive between people on the beach and the water
